The Award is a non-formal education method, which helps young people prepare for life and employment. Since it was founded in the UK in 1956 by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, this world’s leading achievement Award programme has inspired over eight million young people aged between 14 and 24 years to achieve the aims they set themselves, while overcoming challenges in the areas of Service, Physical Recreation, Skills and Adventurous Journey. In Latvia, the Award has been available to young people since 2006, and to date a total of 583 bronze, silver and gold awards have been presented. By complementing formal education with non-formal education outside the classroom, the Award gives young people the possibility to learn, explore and experience more, developing their self-confidence and giving them the competitive edge in the labour market, while improving the community.
